Inheritance Calculator

Calculate your Virasat

The precise Islamic Inheritance Calculator — compute Farāʾiḍ shares for any estate, guided by the Quran and classical jurisprudence.

What is this Islamic Inheritance Calculator?

This is a free, scholarly Islamic Inheritance Calculator built to help families, scholars, and legal professionals accurately distribute an estate according to Ilm al-Farā'iḍ — the Quranic science of shares. This inheritance calculator follows mainstream Sunni (Hanafi) jurisprudence and correctly applies rules for fixed shares (Fard), residuary heirs (Asabah), proportional reduction ('Awl), and return of surplus (Radd).

Simply select whether the deceased was male or female, enter the surviving heirs, provide an optional estate value, and receive a precise breakdown of every heir's share — both as a fraction and as a monetary amount.

Common questions about this Islamic Inheritance Calculator and the rules of Farāʾiḍ

An Islamic Inheritance Calculator is a tool that applies the rules of Ilm al-Farā'iḍ — the Quranic science of estate shares — to determine how much each surviving heir receives from a deceased person's estate. The Quran (Surah An-Nisa, 4:11–12 and 4:176) specifies fixed fractional shares for certain heirs, and this inheritance calculator automates those rules so families can distribute estates accurately and fairly.
Male deceased: His surviving widow(s) collectively receive ⅛ of the estate if he left children, or ¼ if he left no children. Up to four wives share that portion equally. His daughters, parents, and siblings each inherit according to their specified Quranic fractions.

Female deceased: Her surviving husband receives ¼ of the estate if she left children, or ½ if she left none. All other heirs — sons, daughters, parents, siblings — inherit exactly as they would from a male deceased, since the gender rules apply only to the spouse's share.
The Common Heirs tab covers the relatives who inherit in the vast majority of cases: spouse, sons, daughters, father, mother, full siblings, paternal half siblings, and maternal half siblings. The Extended Heirs tab adds more distant relatives — paternal grandparents, maternal grandmother, son's sons (grandsons), son's daughters (granddaughters), nephews (brothers' sons), paternal uncles, and their sons (first cousins). These extended heirs only inherit when closer relatives are absent.
'Awl (عول) occurs when the fixed Quranic shares add up to more than 100% of the estate. Rather than any heir losing their entitlement entirely, every share is reduced proportionally so that the total equals exactly 100%. This Islamic Inheritance Calculator detects and applies 'Awl automatically, and will notify you with an 'Awl badge on the results screen when it has been triggered.
Radd (رد) is the opposite of 'Awl. It occurs when the fixed shares total less than 100% and there are no residuary (Asabah) heirs to receive the remainder. The surplus is returned proportionally to the fixed-share heirs — excluding the spouse, who never participates in Radd. This calculator handles Radd automatically and flags it in the results.
Asabah (عصبة) are residuary heirs who receive whatever remains of the estate after all fixed-share (Fard) heirs have taken their portions. Sons are the primary Asabah — they receive the residue, and when daughters are also present, sons take double the daughters' share. If there are no sons, the father becomes Asabah. If neither exists, full brothers, then paternal half brothers, then nephews, then paternal uncles, and finally cousins (in that priority order) become Asabah.
This inheritance calculator primarily follows Hanafi jurisprudence, which is the predominant school in South Asia, Central Asia, Turkey, and much of the Arab world. The four Sunni schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) agree on the majority of cases covered here. For rulings where the schools diverge — such as the inheritance rights of the paternal grandfather alongside brothers — we recommend consulting a scholar from your specific tradition.
Islamic law requires the following to be settled before inheritance shares are calculated, in this order: (1) Funeral and burial expenses; (2) All outstanding debts of the deceased (including unpaid Zakat, Kaffarah, and loans); (3) Execution of any valid bequest (Wasiyyah), which may not exceed one-third of the remaining estate. Only after these deductions is the net estate divided among the heirs. Enter this net figure into the estate field of this Islamic Inheritance Calculator for accurate monetary results.
According to the majority of Islamic scholars, a non-Muslim does not inherit from a Muslim, and a Muslim does not inherit from a non-Muslim, based on the well-known hadith: "A Muslim does not inherit from a disbeliever, nor does a disbeliever inherit from a Muslim" (Bukhari & Muslim). This Islamic Inheritance Calculator assumes all entered heirs are Muslim and eligible to inherit. Please consult a scholar regarding the civil-law implications of inheritance in your country.
This Islamic Inheritance Calculator is designed as an educational and planning tool to help you understand Farāʾiḍ shares. While it applies classical rules accurately, it should not replace formal legal advice. Estate proceedings vary by country — in many jurisdictions, a notarized inheritance declaration or court order is required. For official proceedings, always work with a qualified Islamic scholar and a licensed attorney or notary in your jurisdiction.
