What is Abjad?

The Ancient Art of Arabic Numerology

Abjad (حروف أبجد) is an ancient system of assigning numerical values to Arabic letters. The name comes from the first four letters of the original Semitic alphabet: أ ب ج د (Abjad).

Also known as Ḥisāb al-Jummal (حساب الجُمَّل), this system has been used for centuries in Islamic scholarship, poetry, historical dating, Quranic analysis, and traditional sciences.

The values follow the original Phoenician/Semitic alphabetical order — different from the modern Arabic alphabet — assigning numbers from 1 to 1000 across the 28 letters.

📖
Quranic Applications
Scholars use Abjad to analyse chronograms — verses whose letter values encode dates of historical events — found throughout classical Islamic literature.
Name Analysis
Islamic tradition uses Abjad to understand the numerical essence of names, exploring compatibility between names and their deeper spiritual significance.
🔢
Historical Dating
Classical poets and historians encoded the year of events within Arabic verses — reading the letters as numbers to reveal the date. This art is called tāʾrīkh.
🕌
Traditional Sciences
The Abjad system forms the basis of numerous classical Islamic sciences including 'Ilm al-Huruf (science of letters) and ruhaniyyat (spiritual sciences).
